ABOUT THE UPPER MURRAY REGION

Upper Murray Region (UMR) is located predominantly in the DHHS Ovens Murray Area, and also incorporates part of Moira Local Government Area (LGA), located in DHHS Goulburn Area.

ALPINE SHIRE COUNCIL

The Alpine Shire is a regional community with three major townships of Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford, located in the two major river valleys, the Ovens and Kiewa valleys. The Shire's economy is based on tourism, forestry and agriculture.

INDIGO SHIRE COUNCIL

The Shire of Indigo has a population of around 16,000, and includes the towns of Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah. The shire's economy is based on value-adding to local primary produce of the region and service provision, including tourism.

TOWONG SHIRE COUNCIL

Towong Shire is a pristine rural and relatively unpopulated area. The economy of the shire is based around primary production, particularly agriculture and forestry. There are many small towns in the municipality, including Corryong and Tallangatta, that service these industries.

MOIRA SHIRE COUNCIL

Moira Shire is bounded by the Murray, Goulburn and Ovens Rivers. The shire's economic base is provided through primary industries. The region is a major fruit, dairying and beef district with growing tourism and manufacturing sectors. It is a popular holiday and retirement area, incorporating a large part of the Murray Valley.

RURAL CITY OF WANGARATTA

Wangaratta is a manufacturing and commercial centre in north-east Victoria. The rural city's traditional strengths of clothing and textile production has been supplemented in recent years by the manufacturing of wine and wood products.

Wangaratta is the municipality's largest urban centre, with approximately 18,000 residents. The region includes wineries, gourmet food, historic legends, cultural heritage and access to numerous State and National Parks. The outdoors are also a focus for popular leisure activities in the region.

CITY OF WODONGA

Wodonga is the twin city to Albury in New South Wales. The cities together form a major growth centre which services a wide rural hinterland in both Victoria and New South Wales. Wodonga's major residential growth complements Albury's retail and commercial focus. The main industry is food manufacturing, and together with retail trade, these two areas are the region's largest employers.
