Connecting Cafés creates meaningful connections as part of a social prescribing project
It has been a exciting time for the team at Birallee Park Neighbourhood House/Felltimber Community Centre as they launch their Connecting Cafes as part of the Upper Murray Regional Neighbourhood House Network's Connecting Communities in Upper Hume Project Phase 2.
"The first cafe, held at the Birallee Cafe & Restaurant was a lovely morning with a mix of existing participants, volunteers, and community members new to our programs," said program coordinator, Amanda Crisp.
Already the cafe is proving to be a great way to engage and provide connection, and refer people into other existing activities.
"One of our attendees expressed that before getting involved in neighbourhood house activities they had no social networks. They would finish work, go home and be alone. These stories remind us why we do what we do!" Amanda said.
Community support is growing , too. "The owner of a nearby store came by, had a chat, and told us she often speaks with people who come into the shop because they are lonely. She'll be letting them know about the cafe. We're thrilled with our first 'sign poster'!
"We are excited to see how we can build on this and the impact we can create in the community."
