Discover connection and creativity at Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House

22 Apr 2025

Discover connection and creativity at Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House through a range of weekly craft groups.

Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House in Wodonga has long been celebrated for its vibrant and diverse art and craft programs spanning over 20 years. These programs have not only offered locals an opportunity to explore their creative potential, but also created a space for community connection, self-expression, personal growth, and the lasting impact it has on the community, extending far beyond the art itself.

A standout program is the weekly Monday Craft, with two sessions throughout the day, allowing participants to bring their own projects and work at their own pace in a relaxed and welcoming environment. What truly sets the Monday Craft Group apart is the deep sense of connection it fosters among its participants. When asked why they attend, participants said “It’s the connection, the friendships, the laughter, and lovely people,” they say. Participants also help to design the program supporting the ongoing success.

An added element of the Neighbourhood House’s commitment to fostering creativity is its gallery & gift store social enterprise, which has now become a permanent fixture in the foyer. This gallery provides local creatives with the unique opportunity to showcase and sell their work, allowing them to develop their skills and build confidence in their artistic abilities.

The sense of community at Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House extends beyond just the art itself. Walking in and out of the Neighbourhood House, visitors are always greeted with a warm “hello” and “goodbye” as they pass the craft room. This simple exchange is a testament to the kindness, love, and care that permeates the space. Relationships formed here extend beyond the program, with participants regularly meeting outside of sessions and continuing to support one another.

Leisha Deery, Manager of Trudewind Road Neighbourhood House, explains that the Monday Craft Group is not just about combating loneliness during the program hours—it’s about creating lasting connections that extend into everyday life, whilst also providing the opportunity for her to check in and ‘keep an eye’ on how they’re going. One participant, who initially joined the group as quiet and reserved, has blossomed over time, becoming an active member of the committee and regularly attending other community activities. This sense of ownership and involvement is key to the success of the group, and the friendly, supportive atmosphere makes everyone feel welcome. With a small term fee, a flexible model, and supported by staff and a group leader, the Monday Craft Group remains accessible to all, allowing participants to thrive socially, creatively, and personally. The group has grown over the years due to mostly word of mouth.
