Expansion of food program at Chiltern

2 Sept 2024

Chiltern Neighbourhood House receives great support from local businesses for their food pantry

Chiltern Neighbourhood House has been running a Food Pantry for several years, providing free pantry food, as well as some fresh produce, for local community members.

“We are very lucky to have such great local support for our Food Share pantry,” said Coordinator, Maree Murphy. “As well as cash and stock donations from community members, Chiltern Rutherglen Butchery are offering us meat at special rates so that we can cook nutritious meals for our freezers, Chiltern Bakery continue to be very generous with their weekly donations of bread, pies and sometimes treats, and the Chiltern IGA now have a donation box near their registers for people to place items, and also offer us any excess fresh produce.

“Next we plan to recruit some volunteers to assist in a fortnightly cook of some produce so that we have warm, healthy and family friendly meals to offer people.”

This is just one of many programs run at the Chiltern Neighbourhood House.

“It’s busy times here at the Chiltern Neighbourhood House,” said Maree. “We’ve had record numbers coming through the doors. One Thursday saw 80 people involved in activities held in our building, as well as our Chin Wag Café held at Lulu & Didge Café in Conness Street. We had participants in Strength Training, Memory Café, Cooking Class, Yoga and Spinning Group. It was fantastic!”
